Spice Your Life: Benefits of Cinnamon

I’m a thief.

Our local Indian restaurant–India Garden–recently changed ownership and is now Bombay Grill. I was struggling to title this post and decided to steal India Garden’s (now dead) tagline–Spice Your Life.

India Garden, consider this my homage to you. Your vegetable korma was so much better than Bombay Grill’s is. I miss you.

Okay, but back on target. Or rather, let’s get to target.

As a child I was completely enthralled by cinnamon brooms.

from thecoven

There was a restaurant near my family’s vacation place that kept a large inventory of cinnamon brooms all year round. While we waited for a table, I would dart over to the brooms and stick my nose right up against the bristles and inhale deeply until physically dragged away by my mother.

I like cinnamon.

The good news is that cinnamon actually has a great many health benefits as well as being so tasty.

Some Health Benefits of Cinnamon

  • lowers LDL cholesterol (that’s the bad kind)
  • helps regulate blood sugar
  • contains a blood-thinning agent
  • can help stop medication-resistant yeast infections
  • when taken with honey can reduce pain associated with arthritis
  • can delay bacteria growth when mixed into food
  • one study showed that it inhibited growth of leukemia and lymphoma cancer cells
  • great source of manganese, fiber, iron, and calcium
  • can minimize cold feet (the extremities kind, not the jitters)
  • aids in digestion
  • contains many anti-oxidants
  • boosts memory (through inhaling and/or taking by mouth)
  • can help alleviate headache pain
  • and more

So why wouldn’t you eat cinnamon?!

Incorporating cinnamon into your daily diet isn’t as difficult as you might imagine. And it doesn’t include cinnamon buns.

My sister used to make cinnamon and honey toast. The toast was pre-buttered and done-on-one-side, in other words buttered and cooked butter side down in a skillet. Then honey was applied, and the concoction was sprinkled with cinnamon. If you are used to classic sugar and cinnamon toast, don’t think of this as that. Try it with just honey first. Maybe it will never replace your cinnamon toast, but it is a delicious way to eat bread!
